Judges 1:1-7
tells us the story of the Israelites first fight after Joshua, their leader had
died. They went against the Canaanites and in particular against a town named
Bezek. The King of Bezek was named Adoni-Bezek. He was well known for cutting
off the thumbs and great toes of the kings he beat and captured in battle.
There are
many interesting points in this story. The Bible offers us many views and
insights to take and place into each of our lives with valuable lessons for all.
One thing which really stood out to me, which I had not seen before was the
fact when Adoni-Bezek was captured and the Children of Israel did unto him as
he had done to three score and ten kings by removing his thumbs and great toes,
he said, “Seventy
kings with their thumbs and big toes cut off used to gather scraps under
my table; as I have done, so God has repaid me.” Notice he was a Canaanite
king. They were a polytheistic society and did not recognize the LORD Jehovah as
the One and only Living God. Yet somehow his first words were a giving of
homage to a God he did not worship or recognize.
Why is this? Somewhere in his life, the LORD Jehovah, had obviously
made some pleas to his heart for him to turn from his wicked ways. These pleas
had obviously lsnded on deaf ears, and in turn calloused the heart of
Adoni-Bezek until his opportunity to repent had vanished. He was taken to
Jerusalem where he died. He was left, before the throne of the LORD Jehovah,
without a friend, a mediator, or intercessor to plead his cause. He had lived
in ignorance or open indifference of one of the greatest principles of life and
law. “Be ye not deceived, for God is not mocked. Whatever a man soweth, that
shall he also reap. For he that soweth unto the flesh, shall of the flesh reap
corruption: but he that soweth unto the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap
everlasting life.” Galatians 6:7-8
Has the LORD Jehovah been pleading with you to return to church,
become loving or more loving, forgiving, or even compassionate again? Be not deceived
God is not mocked and we don’t know when our time will run out!
